WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ANY OWNER SURRENDERS

Unfortunately at this time we are unable to accept any owner surrenders due to extreme overcrowding in our shelter which has been caused by so many people surrendering their pets. We currently have close to 300 animals in the shelter and our facility is built to comfortably house only 80 animals at a time. Our adoptions are at an all-time low and the animals we currently have are living in extremely uncomfortable and stressful conditions due to the overcrowding. Our recommendation would be to contact shelters and rescues outside of Southern California as shelters and rescues across the region are experiencing the same issue that we are. If contacting outside shelters and rescues is not an option for you, you can contact Animal Control for the city that you live in, but your pet does run the risk of being euthanized for time and space.
We are sorry that we cannot help at this time.

welcome to our nook of the web

Our shelter is located in Imperial Valley, California along the US/Mexico Border Region and adjacent to Arizona

The Imperial Valley is located 125 miles east of San Diego, CA, 70 miles west of Yuma, AZ and 30 miles north of Mexico. We are located in a rural and agricultural area along the US/Mexico International Border Region.

Being so remotely located has meant limited opportunities and resources when compared with other shelters and rescues in the urban and coastal cities.

The Humane Society of Imperial County serves and works in conjunction with local cities and their municipal animal control agencies. We currently collaborate with the cities of Brawley, Calipatria, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial and Westmorland. When the lost or stray animals that they pick up are not claimed by their owners, the animals are transferred into our care. From there, they are adopted out or sent to rescue groups outside of the Imperial Valley.

We work with outside shelters and rescue groups so these animals are given every chance possible at finding their furever homes. Our goal is to prevent the needless euthanasia of happy, healthy and adoptable animals.

We also pride ourselves in our efforts to curve the ever growing population of unwanted pets by providing access to low-cost spay and neuter services to our community.
